Why would you want to detox your skincare routine? Did you know that women use 12 or more products on our skin a day, on average. About twice the number men use. Most of today’s products are derived from man-made ingredients that are created to mimic natural ingredients, but much cheaper. Or, the ingredients are used as a preservative to help the product last for a lot longer on store shelves.
Did you know that the FDA does not regulate skincare products? Did you know that the United States allows 29 ingredients in products that are banned in Canada and 15 ingredients that are banned in Europe?
Several years ago, I learned about The Environmental Working Group and their site called Skin Deep. They research many of the most common skincare products and then give them a rating based on several factors. The first rating is on the amount of hazardous ingredients and the second is a rating on how much data is available on that particular product or it’s ingredients. Some products may rate well on hazards, but only due to the fact that there is not much data available, so this second rating is important to take into consideration. A rating of 1-2 is good. That means that there are very low potential health hazards. A rating of 4 or higher is a product you might not feel good about putting on your body. After all, our skin is our largest organ and what goes on our skin, seeps through the layers to your other organs.
Here’s an example of the ratings of some products I used to use, before I began detoxing my skincare routine.
My Products EWG Rating
Pantene Pro V Intense Repair Shampoo and Conditioner 5
Olay Gentle Clean Foaming Face Cleanser Fragrance Free 3
Olay Age Defying Daily Moisturizer 5
Bare Minerals Foundation Powder I can’t find this, but all Bare Mineral products are rated 1-8, so search individual products.
L’Oreal Paris True Match Blush 4
Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof 4
Crest 3D White Toothpaste 3
Secret Invisible Fresh Solid Antiperspirant Shower Fresh 5
Products I use now
I’ve since changed all of my products to cleaner ones. They don’t all have a rating, but if you search the ingredients, they have a rating of 1-2.
DoTERRA Deoderant Gentle Formula
Tapioca Starch 1
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride 1
Stearyl alcohol 1
Magnesium hydroxide 1
Shea butter 1
You get the idea. All of the ingredients come out clean.
DoTERRA OnGuard Toothpaste
DoTERRA Shampoo and Conditioner
DoTERRA Facial Cleanser
(I’m really not trying to sell you on DoTERRA products right now! That’s just truthfully what I use, and they are really clean ingredients because that’s who they are as a company and the wellness advocates that promote the products demand clean products. There are many other brands that you can check out on the EWG’s website, Skin Deep, that will have clean ingredients as well.)
Maybelline Fit Me! Stick Foundation (I couldn’t find this exact one, but the powder is rated 2)
My next purchase will be the W3ll People stick foundation, I think. It is EWG verified, which means it is really clean.
E.L.F. lip pencil (I couldn’t find any E.L.F. products on EWG, but when I looked before, all of them were rated 1-2)
I’ve done really well replacing all of my body care products and laundry detergent, but make-up is still a work in progress. I have a friend that sells Beauty Counter products and their make-up has really great ratings on EWG. I am looking to purchase some of these soon. This might be an option for you if you know someone that sells it, or I can send you my friend’s info.
I also like the W3ll People brand and Mineral Fusion is rated really high. There are literally thousands of products on the Skin Deep website for you to check out.
Start today by choosing one thing you will switch out. Maybe next month or in the next few weeks, you can switch another product. If you would like to try some of the doTERRA products or learn more about them, send me an email, or comment below. I would love to be your go-to for essential oils and essential oil products. You can also join my FaceBook group here. This is where I share everything I’m learning about essential oils and how to use them.
